J. Emanuel Chocolatier, a beloved local treasure with a rich history, is embarking on an exciting new journey. Recently acquired by Xocolatl Ventures, a company founded by two local families with a deep passion for chocolate, the store is set to continue its tradition of excellence while introducing fresh energy and ideas. The new owners bring over 15 years of family tradition in chocolate making abroad, with roots in coffee and cacao growing that date back over a century. The company’s name, Xocolatl, is derived from the Nawatl word meaning “bitter water,” which refers to the traditional Aztec chocolate drink.

Founded in 1997 by Jonathan Emanuel Dambrot  and his mother, J. Emanuel Chocolatier began with a dream to carry on the legacy of Jonathan’s grandfather, Hans Goldschneider, a pioneer in the industry who sold his famous handmade truffles in NYC during the 1970s. Over the years, the shop has expanded its offerings under the guidance of Tad Van Leer, who introduced new lines of traditionally flavored and wine-infused truffles, and later under entrepreneur Michael Canzano, who brought his own creative flair to the store.

Michael Canzano , who took over J. Emanuel Chocolatier in 2012, brought with him not only a passion for cooking but also a deep commitment to quality. With a love for creating culinary delights using all-natural ingredients, Michael quickly immersed himself in the world of artisanal chocolate. He underwent intensive training with Tad Van Leer and supplemented his education through diverse courses, developing a unique style that blends traditional techniques with innovative flavors.

Under Michael’s leadership, J. Emanuel Chocolatier has reached new heights, earning recognition for its creative use of chocolate and outstanding quality. His talent as a chocolatier has been instrumental in expanding the store’s offerings, introducing a variety of new, unique flavors that have delighted customers and garnered acclaim from local and national press. Michael’s ability to craft both classic and inventive confections has solidified J. Emanuel’s reputation as a premier destination for chocolate lovers.

Now, as part of this exciting new chapter, the store has undergone a beautiful renovation and is celebrating a Grand Reopening. The flavor and quality you love remain intact, with Michael continuing as chocolatier to craft your favorite chocolates while developing new creations.
